Don’t Tell Aunty, Surry Hills - Review

Sydney’s trendy suburb of Surry Hills has no shortage on upscale eateries - there’s almost one on every corner! If you’re looking for modern Indian food with a great atmosphere, Don’t Tell Aunty will be right up your alley.

The whimsical name is a playful dig at the traditional Indian Aunties, who would probably not approve of the restaurant’s modern take on Indian food!

Walking into Don’t Tell Aunty, you’ll be greeted with a colourful interior with playful decor. Staff are friendly and attentive, and you can watch the chefs hard at work in the open kitchen. Don’t Tell Aunty has a fully stocked bar, with a great selection of cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks.

We ordered several dishes from Don’t Tell Aunty’s menu, including the semolina balls of happiness, Colonel Tao’s cauliflower, vegan chicken bites, the vegan tasting platter and kulfi ice creams for dessert. 

The vegan tasting platter was basically a thali - it came salad, vegan butter chicken, palak mushroom, Mysore daal, channa masala, Malabar curry, potatoes and eggplant, vegan Rogan Josh, plus rice and naan. We’re usually big meat eaters, but we didn’t miss it one bit eating this meal. Our favourite curries with the vegan butter chicken and the malabar!

Overall, we’d recommend Don’t Tell Aunty for vegans, vegetarians and anyone in between. Bookings here are a must, as the place is busy from open until close!
