Rashays, Sydney - Review

Fried chicken and Mac and cheese at Rashays restaurant in Western Sydney

This Western Sydney restaurant chain has a reputation for serving classic Australian food. With comfortable seating and modern decor, it’s a popular choice for families and friends looking for halal meals.

Flicking through the menu outside the restaurant, we were surprised how many options there are at Rashays - burgers, pastas, pizza, salads, steak and more. But unfortunately for us, that’s where the positives ended.

We initially ordered one of their promotional deals that we had seen on Facebook, which was great value. After our drinks arrived however, a staff member came back to our table and advised us that we couldn’t actually get the promotion. Apparently it was for takeaway only, and we were told quite abruptly that we could leave if we wanted our food. We thought this was a bit strange - there was no mention of this being a problem when we ordered. But since we were looking for a sit-down meal and already started on the drinks, we went ahead and ordered some other dishes instead.

Our second order was one of their specials, a mac and cheese burger, and a classic chicken schnitzel. The burger looked very impressive, but ended up being quite heavy in terms of texture and flavour. We wish there was a little bit of acidity to help cut through the greasiness. The chicken schnitzel was okay, but definitely nothing to write home about. It tasted similar to a supermarket-bought frozen schnitzel.

When it came time to settle the bill, they tried to charge us for two sets of food - the initial promotional meal we ordered, plus the meal we actually ended up eating. We spoke with the manager who couldn’t comprehend the situation, and still wanted us to pay for the meal that the staff cancelled on us. Eventually they said they’d ‘let it go this time’, as if it was our fault one of the staff put through the order incorrectly. The whole experience was pretty off-putting, especially since we got blamed for the situation, which clearly a miscommunication between staff at the restaurant.

With most mains on the menu between the $20-$50 mark, we expected quality food and service at Rashays, but sadly that wasn’t the case for us. In our opinion, the only reason to visit Rashays would be if they’re having a crazy promotion and the food is ridiculously cheap (make sure you check if it’s takeaway only though!). Otherwise, we think it’s probably best to skip this halal restaurant chain in favour of your local pub for a basic feed.
