Aussie Chinatown Tour With Local Sauce Tours - Review

learning about sydney's chinatown with local sauce tour guide

We love being tourist in our own city - there’s always something new to learn!

So in the spirit of trying out new activities, we recently went on a guided tour around Sydney’s Chinatown with Local Sauce Tours. We had heaps of fun and learnt a whole bunch about one of Sydney’s most vibrant foodie areas.

Local Sauce Tours is a small tour company, specialising in intimate guided tours around some of Sydney’s coolest areas. Their tours have a focus on our favourite pastime - eating food! International travel restrictions have made it tough for the team over the past few years, but that hasn’t stopped them from running tours for curious locals like us.

The Aussie Chinatown – Stories, Snacks & Secrets tour is $60 per person, and runs for approximately 2 hours. The tour is designed for solo travellers, couples, small groups and families, with a maximum group size of 12. The aim of this Local Sauce Tour is to showcase the history of Sydney’s Chinatown through food. There are a minimum of 4 food stops along the way, where you’ll get to enjoy authentic hand-held snacks that represent the culture of the area.

learning about chinese history in australia with local sauce tours

Our tour was run by Local Sauce founder Justin, who was a wealth of knowledge - he really knew his stuff when it came to the ins and outs of the Chinatown area. Justin spoke in amazing depth about the history of Chinese Australians and their significant contribution through our country’s history. I bet you didn’t know that the first Chinese to ever come to Australia may have been as far back as 1450 A.D.!

As we walked around, we sampled some delicious street food, including Kowloon Cafe’s famous seafood balls, Emperor’s Custard Puffs, Skewer BBQ’s famous cumin skewers and soup dumplings from Nanjing Dumpling. Our favourite stop was Xi’an Cuisine, where we tried their delicious Xi’an Pork in Pita Bread - they were super satisfying and made our mouths water! Aside from the food stops, the tour included fun interactive games, and a surprise souvenir. Even though we already spend quite a lot of time in Sydney’s Chinatown, Justin introduced us to some new foodie spots that we would have otherwise walked right past.

Overall, we really enjoyed our Local Sauce Tour around Chinatown! We’d recommend this tour for tourists visiting Sydney who want an intimate experience delving into the culture of Chinatown. But equally, we think it’s a great activity for locals to get a fresh perspective on their usual stomping ground.
