Gigi, Newtown - Review

Delicious Vegan Pizzas in Newtown Italian restaurant Gigi

There are plenty of restaurants in the Newtown area, but Italian institution Gigi is one of the inner west's top eateries for vegans and meat-eaters alike.

You'll usually find a line around the block for Gigi before they even open - that's how you know this place must be epic! Gigi is famous for classic Neapolitan flavours with a modern twist - their menu is completely vegan.

Mushroom arancini Inner west Italian food at Gigi

Keen to give this establishment a go, we visited during the busy weekend lunch rush. We ordered a plate of arancini for entree, along with a ‘Regina’ and ‘Patate’ pizza to share. The arancini were perfectly fried balls of goodness, but the star of the show was definitely Gigi's famous wood-fired pizzas. We loved the velvety San Marzano tomato base, sweet pops of fresh tomatoes and creamy tree-nut ricotta on the Regina, and the decadent mix of potato and truffle on the Patate. The pizza bases were cooked to perfection, with crispy edges, paper thin centres and a lovely doughy flavour. We are pretty big meat-eaters, but truth be told we didn't miss the animal products one bit!

It's worth mentioning that since Gigi doesn't use traditional cheese, they are quite heavy-handed with olive oil to make up for the missing creamy texture. This can mean that the pizzas are quite oily. We didn't mind the generous layer of olive oil on our pizzas, but it could be a bit overwhelming for those who are after a healthy meal.

Pricewise, Gigi is on the higher end when it comes to pizza joints, but we think that is totally justified given the quality of the food here. We'll be back for more!
